Casablanca

So, yeah, Casablanca. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise...I know there are a lot of folks out there that want to nay say about this movie, "boo, it's such a piece of crap" but they're WRONG I TELL YOU!

Wait, no, no one talks bad about this movie! Nor should they! I just saw it for the first time recently and it blew me away!

The first thing I expect when I watch an old movie is some diluted plot, where they're happy to even be getting anything on film, much less making any drama. Bad actors and lighting, bad cuts and sound, and of course, nothing enjoyable in the least to my 21st century movie-eyes.

WRONG. Watch this movie. The drama is THERE, people, it's THERE! I'm not seeing things!

If there was ever a movie that was timeless, if there was ever a movie that deserves all the acclaim it has gotten, if there was ever a movie that stands out as being appropriate for its time AND ahead of it, well, it's probably another movie, but THIS ONE TOO!

Again, that is all I have to say. M.E.S.S.'s (movies everyone should see) are quick and dirty around here. (haha...get it the pun...dirty....messes......phew, I crack me up)

In my ever so humble (or maybe not) opinion, a vast gulf has opened between the movies of yesteryear and most of those today. That gulf is in the artistry and symbolism that was used so very successfully in a day when special effects and gratuitous sex & violence were just not included in the footage.

Casablanca is a tribute not only to the actors, director and writers, but to the notion that messages can be transferred subtly without being forced down the audience’s throat. Here in black and white, you are embraced, moved, tossed about and then when all is said and done, gently reseated to take the entire experience home with you.

Great post. Thanks!
